DEFINITION
Functional Medicine principle
Physiology, functions, and system relationships are at the root of health imbalances. Functional Medicine recognizes the principle – “One condition, Many Causes | One Cause, Many Conditions.”
Functional medicine takes a different approach to your health. Instead of just asking, "What disease do you have?", we ask, "Why are you sick?" This simple question changes everything. It affects how we listen to your story, what tests we run, and how we create a plan to help you heal.
Think of your body as a connected system, not just a collection of separate parts. If something's not working right in one area – like your gut, hormones, or immune system – it doesn't stay there. It can spread and cause other problems. For example, feeling tired might lead to trouble concentrating. Inflammation can cause pain. And gut issues can even affect your mood. Functional medicine helps us find the source of these problems. We understand that one problem can have many causes, and one cause can lead to many different symptoms. How these imbalances show up in your body depends on your unique genes, your environment, and your life experiences.
Instead of just giving you a medication to manage your symptoms, functional medicine doctors take the time to truly understand you. We use specialized testing, careful listening, and knowledge of your individual biology to create a complete picture of your health. This allows us to create a personalized plan that doesn't just cover up the symptoms, but addresses the root causes that made you sick in the first place.

ADVANTAGE
What is Our Advantage?
The goal is to restore balance and optimize the body’s natural healing mechanisms. GWCIM has been practicing integrative and functional medicine in Washington, D.C. for over 25 years — making us the longest-established integrative clinic in the region. That longevity isn't just history; it's depth. Over decades, we've built a multidisciplinary team of more than 20 clinicians whose expertise spans conventional medicine, naturopathic medicine, Chinese medicine, nutrition, mind-body therapies, and more. When you come to us for functional medicine, you're not getting a solo practitioner with a single lens — you're getting a coordinated team that can see your health from every angle.
APPROACH
GWCIM Approach
We start by listening closely to your story. Your first appointment is more than just a quick check-up. It's a chance for us to truly understand what's been happening with your health. We'll explore your symptoms, your medical history, what you've been exposed to in your environment, your sleep habits, stress levels, your relationship with food and exercise, and any significant events in your life that may have impacted your well-being. We use a special tool called the Functional Medicine Timeline to map out your health journey from birth to the present day. This helps us identify key moments – like infections, traumas, or major life transitions – that may be contributing to your current health concerns. Many patients tell us this in-depth conversation is one of the most helpful and insightful experiences they've had in a medical setting.
From there, we use comprehensive lab testing to get a clear picture of what's happening beneath the surface. This goes beyond standard bloodwork and helps us pinpoint the root causes of your health problems. Depending on your situation, we might assess things like:
- Your Gut Microbiome: This looks at the balance of bacteria and other microorganisms in your digestive system. An imbalance in your gut microbiome can affect your digestion, immune system, and even your mood.
- Intestinal Permeability: This measures how well your gut lining is functioning as a barrier. If the gut lining becomes too permeable (often called "leaky gut"), it can allow substances to enter your bloodstream that trigger inflammation and other health problems.
- Mitochondrial Function: This assesses how well your cells are producing energy. Problems with mitochondrial function can lead to fatigue, brain fog, and other symptoms.
- Hormone Levels: We look at a full range of hormones and how your body is processing them.
- Exposure to Toxins: We can assess your levels of heavy metals and environmental toxins.
- Food Sensitivities: We can identify foods that may be triggering inflammation or other reactions in your body.
- Genetic Factors: We can look at specific genes that affect how your body handles detoxification, inflammation, and other important processes (for example, the MTHFR gene).
- Inflammatory Markers: We measure levels of inflammation in your body.
- Nutrient Levels: We assess your levels of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.
Every test we order has a clear purpose: to reveal the specific imbalances that are contributing to your experience of illness.
Once we have a clear picture, we create a personalized treatment plan to help you restore your health. This plan is never one-size-fits-all. It may include:
- Targeted Nutritional Interventions: Specific dietary changes to support your body's healing process.
- Precision Supplementation: Using specific supplements to address nutrient deficiencies or support specific body functions.
- IV Nutrient Therapy: Delivering nutrients directly into your bloodstream for enhanced absorption.
- Botanical and Herbal Medicine: Using plant-based remedies to support healing.
- Lifestyle Medicine Protocols: Incorporating changes in exercise, sleep, and stress management.
- Stress Regulation Strategies: Techniques to help you manage stress and promote relaxation.
- Recommendations for other Integrative Treatments: This may include therapies offered within our clinic, such as acupuncture, somatic therapy, or integrative mental health support, to provide comprehensive care.
Science Meets Wisdom
Our approach is grounded in peer-reviewed research and rigorous clinical training — while remaining open to the full spectrum of healing modalities that evidence supports.
Patient as Partner
Healing happens when you understand your own body and feel empowered to care for it. We prioritize education, transparency, and shared decision-making at every step.
Your Whole Story Matters
Genetics, environment, relationships, trauma, nutrition, sleep — all of it influences your health. We look at you as a whole person, not a list of diagnoses.

Q&A
Q&A
Is functional medicine evidence-based? A: Yes. Functional medicine is grounded in peer-reviewed biomedical science and systems biology. The testing we use, the interventions we recommend, and the frameworks that guide our clinical thinking are all rooted in published research. That said, functional medicine also embraces a broader evidence-informed toolkit — including nutrition, lifestyle, botanical medicine, and mind-body therapies — areas where a growing body of research supports their use, and where GWCIM's team has deep clinical expertise.
We use a combination of standard labs (which your insurance may cover) and specialized functional testing ordered through labs such as Genova Diagnostics, Doctor's Data, and others. Functional tests might include comprehensive stool analysis for gut microbiome health and intestinal permeability, organic acids testing for metabolic function, advanced hormone panels including cortisol rhythms and sex hormone metabolites, environmental and heavy metal toxin panels, food sensitivity testing, genetic panels (such as MTHFR), and comprehensive nutritional status panels. We'll always discuss which tests make sense for your specific situation — and explain what the results mean in plain language.
Absolutely — and we encourage it. Functional medicine is not a replacement for conventional care; it's a complement to it. We regularly collaborate with patients' primary care physicians and specialists, and we'll never ask you to discontinue treatments that are working for you. Our goal is to add clarity, depth, and additional tools to your care — not to compete with your other providers.
As much of your health history as possible — prior lab results, imaging reports, a list of current medications and supplements, and any relevant records from previous providers. The more context we have, the richer our understanding of your health story and the more precisely we can target your care. It also helps to come with a clear sense of your top health priorities and what you're hoping to achieve.
